When Louis Choy was completing his Mechanical Engineering studies, like most new graduates he was approaching a crossroads in his career planning. 

Not entirely sure where to apply his degree, Louis found that Ventia provided a unique opportunity to allow him to try different career paths.  

Ventia's grad program rotates graduates through a new business unit three times over the two-year program.

"What really stood out to me, was the varied nature of the graduate program," Louis says. "As I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do, Ventia has given me the option to try many different parts of the business." 

Louis joined Ventia's Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) team earlier this year working as an Operational Excellence Advisor, and says he really enjoyed the flexibility of the role. 

"When I first joined, I knew I didn't just want to be in the field or just in the office, so I spoke with my manager and I was able to split my role half in the field and half in the office.  This means I've really gained some great experience," explains Louis. 

Being on this team really threw me into the thick of things, which was fantastic. I had the expectation that I would just be supporting people, but I'm treated as part of the team with my own responsibilities. It's great I can own my work! 

So far Louis has worked across some pretty iconic projects across Australia, such as the M80 Sydney Roads upgrade - working on the latest ITS technology - and the Smarter Roads Project in Victoria where Ventia is rolling out new automated vehicle detection loops. 

"I'm really looking forward to my next rotation and learning as much as I can." 

Louis says he'd recommend this program to other new grads, as it gives you a lot of exposure to different teams, different locations and different skillsets.

"I'd say go for it!" he says. "There's so much opportunity within one organisation."
