STEM skills are crucial for Australia's changing future.

STEM programs encourage the study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-based subjects.

The Australian Resources and Energy Group (AMMA) Bright Future STEM program is a national program that engages 9 -12-year-old girls and boys in STEM energy and resource industry experiences. 

The program provides exposure to female STEM professionals, encourages an interest in STEM careers and gives insights into future STEM employment in the Australian resources and energy industry.

Prue Fellowes, from Ventia's Rig and Well Services business, spoke with two groups of students at Glenvale State Primary School about her career as a finance professional and how mathematics has helped achieve her goals.

As an Estimator for Ventia, it is Prue's job to provide approximations of the time, money, materials and labour required for specific projects.

"I really enjoyed talking with the students about my role at Ventia. I received some interesting questions about our rig operations."

It was really rewarding spending time with the future generation of leaders and to communicate the importance of the resources sector and the roles it has to offer to them.

According to AMMA, currently many industry STEM programs are focused on students in high school and tertiary education. However, this is often too late as they have already decided what subjects they enjoy. It is vital to engage and expose children to STEM activities and the careers and opportunities provided by STEM at an early age.

AMMA Director Operations Tara Diamond said inspiring female role models from companies play a critical role in the program. 

"It's incredibly important to expose boys and girls to industry role models from the resource and energy sector, in particular female professionals from a variety of roles, who can break down the stereotypes of traditionally male-dominated occupations," she said.

"By showcasing their passion for the industry and sharing the story of their own career pathway, it helps students understand the career possibilities for the future."

Amanda Raynor, Commercial Manager and Bryon Lane, HSE Team Leader also assisted students with interactive activity sessions on the day.

Each program event involves hands-on, educational activities to create excitement and wonder about STEM in the resources and energy industry.
