Her strong convictions and energy for change has seen Melanie Evans, Ventia’s Group Executive for Digital Services recognised as a finalist in the Executive Leadership category at the New Zealand Rainbow Excellence Awards.

Melanie leads a team of more than 100 people across the areas of data and AI, technology, security, strategy, digital and data business development and development of digital solutions.

But her influence spreads further that the team she leads. She is on the executive team, reporting directly to the CEO and is the executive sponsor and champion for Ventia’s LGBTTQIA+ community. She also chairs the Australia and NZ LGBTTQIA+ working group.

Her senior position affords her visibility and the opportunity to affect significant change. She leverages that by leaning into the issues that matter most to her, committing time and energy to supporting and showcasing these issues.

The Australia and NZ Rainbow Employee Network has developed new policies and training, the adoption of pronouns in email signatures, all gender bathrooms, and Ventia Rainbow branded merchandise - which continues to sell out.

Melanie says “I know first-hand how an inclusive workplace can make or break an individual’s journey and how diversity, equity and inclusion policies are vital for creating these inclusive workplaces”.

I am proud of what we have achieved but I will continue my advocacy to ensure people feel free to bring their whole self to work – every day.
